It’s after lunch and I’m at work and I can’t focus on a single fucking thing. All I can think of is Rachel trying to fuck me.

Why does she want to ruin my life? How the hell is she gonna get her alimony if I’m thrown out on the street? But that’s what she wants – to ruin me.

That’s not going to happen.

I have enough sway on this trading floor to get my way. No one has to know, especially not the old man, George. He’s a nice enough guy and I love him and all, but this is my ass on the line we’re talking about, my future. And what’s a few grand to a huge, multinational company with billions in assets and a firm reputation amongst the public? Not much. Yeah…so it might be about $100,000 by this point that I… owe …but what the hell? That’s nothing a few strokes of the keyboard can’t take care of. And I know just how to do it.

Our workstation computers at our desks are pretty much wired to just allow trading, calling clients…the basic things to buy and sell stocks. We don’t do most online stuff, certainly no email or anything like that. And we certainly don’t have access to the wider records and databases and systems of the wider work network. No, those are on some different machines fed into different servers. But they’re in the office, just not on the main floor. Thankfully, I have the key.

I head to one of those offices during the busy 1 PM hour, when our traders are working hard and loud after work to get their daily quotas in. Get ‘em in early enough and you can usually skip out before 5. That’s a huge incentive for most of us.

Needless to say, no one is paying me any attention as surreptitiously slip into one of those offices, close the door behind me. The walls are filled with filing cabinets while in the center of the room is a single table, three computer workstations on it. Each of them allows access to company records, financial statements and documents, as well as various funding accounts for company outings, supplies, petty cash, and more.

I sit down at one station, start it up, get to the login screen. That’s when I take out my wallet, find the scrap of paper I wrote George’s password on a good six months ago. It was tough getting him away from his desk, but I managed it and then found where he kept his password book. Like most old men, he never changes the thing. Since that day, I’ve had a virtual run of the company.

I get the accounts up that I want, the ones I’ve been funneling money from. I’m in the process of going through them, making new entries to cover up the withdrawals I’ve made over the past few months.

And then the door opens behind me. My heart freezes in my chest. Chills go up and down my spine.
